Municipal biogas plants – a significant market for liquid biogas

Municipal biogas plants constitute an important segment in Biofriga’s long-term market strategy. In parallel with its work in the agricultural segment, the company has for some time been engaged in dialogue with municipal biogas producers and has identified significant potential for the upgrading and liquefaction of biogas. As part of this work, a targeted information campaign aimed at municipal biogas producers is now being launched. At the same time, the full focus remains on the agricultural sector.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants are among Sweden’s largest biogas producers, accounting for around 30 per cent of the country’s biogas production. In total, approximately 712 GWh of biogas is produced at 131 facilities across Sweden.

Today, a large proportion of the biogas is used for buses and passenger cars. As these transport modes are electrified, local authorities need to find new applications for their biogas. At the same time, demand for liquid biogas is increasing, particularly in heavy transport and industry.

By upgrading and liquefying biogas, municipal plants can create new revenue opportunities whilst strengthening the local energy supply. Since 2022, it has also been possible to apply for investment support via Klimatklivet, which further improves the investment conditions.

As part of this initiative, Biofrigas is now carrying out targeted activities aimed at municipal biogas producers. These include LinkedIn, direct mailings and an interview in the next issue of the trade journal Avfall & Miljö.

The initiative forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to develop business opportunities in the production of liquid biogas.
